The program raises teenagers' consciousness of the need to beware of influence –
who is influencing you, and what is it they are trying to get you to do? |
The Keynote Content The program engages the audience's critical brain, helping them to exercise that muscle we must use to distinguish between reality and illusion – the very distinction that the tobacco industry has tried for decades to erase. As an expert in the art of illusion, I am perfectly positioned to demonstrate the illusions of tobacco advertising: how the industry creates appealing lies, how they manipulate our fears and desires. Magical illusions are created by what magicians call "misdirection"; that is, the art of influencing an audience to look where you want them to look. Demonstrating this right before their eyes is a very powerful way to impress upon young people how easily we can be influenced. Influence, illusion, and manipulation are key themes of the presentation. In addition to demonstrating all of this magically, I use an overhead projector to analyze the illusions and manipulations of tobacco advertisements. |

James with younger teens at youth conference in Tuscon, AZ, May 2007 (Sponored by the American Lung Association and Pima County Health Dept.) |
What Makes This Program Stand Out? |
I'm sure the answer to that question is evident by now, but just to repeat, one of
our most difficult challenges is effectively communicating important messages
to hyperactive, hyper-media-saturated youth. Live entertainment is something many people do not get to experience all that often – much less an encounter with a skilled magician/mind-reader. What I'm after in my presentation is to turn their world upside down – present them with impossibilities that nonetheless seem to be happening. It is this experience – this "jolt" – along with humor and entertainment, that helps convince them that this is something worth listening to, and to open their minds to the message. You're putting money into your next youth event – use it wisely to help get your message across. The LAST thing you want is for your CONFERENCE MAIN EVENT to be an embarrassing failure that makes the whole organization look bad and poisons the motivation for the event. Nothing is worse than hiring a main speaker who turns out to be content-heavy, but boring; or funny and entertaining, but shallow. My communication skills with young people are guaranteed. That's exactly what I offer . . . . a GUARANTEE: |

James with teens from Memorial High School in Port Arthur, Texas, at the 2007 Texas Teen Tobacco Summit. |

them. Now take the next step: contact me today and let's talk about how I can
help you with your next event. Thanks for reading! Very truly yours, The Youth Motivator P.S.: I'm happy to discuss how I can custom-create a program for your specific purposes. Let's make contact today! |
James, what a wonderful way for students to learn about one of life's true killers.
It's great when we can learn valuable content while being entertained. L.B. Havird, Coordinator for "GADS" (Get Air Don't Smoke) Lemon Grove, CA A perfect balance of entertainment and serious thought provoking material. Lisa Larson Safe School Coordinator Rancho Palos Verdes, CA Thanks for making the rounds to all our County schools, James, and helping to educate our students about the dangers of smoking. Kristi Martin, Christus St. Joseph's Med. Ctr. Cancer Prevention Program Paris, Texas |
I can make that guarantee because I know that what I do works, and it will work for
you. To make sure you accomplish your stated objectives for your next youth
event, give me a call or email me right now. If you're planning an event, DON'T WAIT to contact me -- unless you want to hear me say that I don't have your date available. My calendar fills up. |
If your audience doesn't enjoy, pay attention and learn from what I present to them,
I'll tear up the check and donate $100 to your organization. No kidding!I |
Subj: Amazing Date: 11/4/06 To: jwmagic Your show was amazing today at the Reality Check Summit. We enjoyed your performance. It showed a lot of us something we didn't know about what the tobacco industry does to us to influence us into using their products. I hope one day you will come to our school and do your magic. Krystina Numeracki, Student Southwestern High School, Jamestown, NY |
"Reality Check" is dedicated to exposing the tricks, lies and manipulations of the
tobacco industry. Last year I was the featured speaker at their youth training
sessions in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and New York City. If you're hosting a special youth conference or event, or want to take the message into your local schools, you will want to hear all about what I have to offer. To reach young people, you need a way to grab and hold interest. Here's an email I recently received from a teenager who attended one of those Reality Check conferences: |
Exactly what we needed for our BUSTED youth conference: both entertaining, and yet
the anti-smoking message came across very clear and strong. Great job! Ron Radaker Assoc. Director of Programming BUSTED Clarion Univ. Health Science Edu. Ctr. Clarion, Pennsylvania |
On April 24, 2007, I was the opening speaker for a most inspirational event – 1,600
teenagers from all over Pennsylvania descended upon the State capital
building in Harrisburg, and decorated the steps with plants to symbolize smoke-free,
clean air. They underwent a day of education and training sponsored by the
anti-smoking organization, "BUSTED." I had the priviledge of opening the
conference with my presentation for these courageous young people. |

The students at my high school and Howell High School were extremely moved by your
presentation. |
Until your presentation, I had never seen my classmates as engaged in an assembly
program. |
I honestly did not believe that any presentation on tobacco for teenagers could be
successful at affecting the teen's decisions, but your program is extremely unique
and highly effective. |
I am positive that you are perfect for any teen-focused tobacco prevention program. |
Your program for our "Peace Day" was a huge success and our whole school was impressed
beyond words! We appreciate all that you did and look forward to working
with you in the future. Thanks again! Joe Pelliccia, Activities Dir. Dake Jr. High School Rochester, New York |
Over the course of 15 years I have developed powerful presentations that stimulate,
motivate, and captivate young people in a way that simple lecturing cannot possibly
hope to achieve. I'd like to share with you a little bit more about the
content of my anti-smoking youth program. |

The problem, as I'm sure you've encountered, is how to break through those walls
of "cool" that so many teenagers erect against positive messages coming from adults.
The teenage audience is a daunting one for many otherwise very effective
presenters. I have solved that problem! |

Why You Should Listen to Me |
I started out as a professional magician, and I still entertain with magic; but my
real mission began when I started doing anti-smoking assembly programs for schools
15 years ago. These were phenomenally successful – |
He is charismatic and readily captures the hearts of kids. His message regarding
smoking had the student body absolutely spellbound. Hal Rosewall, Activites Director Laguna Middle School San Luis Obispo, California |

Having said all this, please understand that I am not the perfect solution for every
conference or training event. My presentations have significant content, but
they are not top-heavy with facts, figures, graphs, charts, statistics, and other
forms of information that would be important if you are trying to accomplish
a more intensive training. I do not conduct lengthy training seminars. What I do is motivate. I communicate important basic concepts – life changing concepts – in an entertaining, captivating way. And I do that in one keynote presentation. If that is what you are after, then what are you waiting for? Call or email me now! |
The Communication Medium |
We seem to be running out of ways to express how truly thankful we are that you have
chosen to grace us again and again and again with your talents and time. Please
continue to entertain our guests and members! Dale Hindman, President Academy of Magical Arts Magic Castle, Hollywood, CA |
I honed my magical skills at the famous private club for magicians in Hollywood,
California, The Magic Castle. This is the magic "Mecca" for magicians around the
world. |
The magic and mentalism I do for teens is not "kiddie magic." Rather, I present the
same highly sophisticated, state-of-the-art performance pieces I used to entertain
adults and celebrities at the Magic Castle. In fact, here's some comments
from a few celebrities I've entertained: |
Despite the seriousness of the topic, there is lots of humor in the presentation. And, of course, there is jaw-dropping amazement. |

A Few Examples |
Your audience will shout with disbelief and amazement when an audience volunteer's
head suddenly grows 20 times its normal size – and then shrinks 20 times normal
size! They will laugh their heads off when an audience volunteer thinks I am making paper balls vanish right in my hands, but the whole audience can easily see that I am simply throwing the balls over his head. I particularly concentrate on MENTALISM in my high school program, because teenagers find that even more amazing that magic. Mentalism involves mind- reading type effects and other demonstrations of amazing mind power -- such as when I memorize an entire deck of playing cards in 45 seconds. |

Entertaining as they are, these routines are not just about entertainment. I am an
expert in the art of adapting magic for educational purposes. The growing head is used as a lead-in to talking about the power of illusion. The
paper ball routine is an effective and entertaining example of the power of influence. |
Almost all my routines involve audience participation. I am constantly bringing someone up on stage to assist, and that's part of what
makes the whole thing so much fun for teens – they LOVE to see their peers take
the stage. It pulls the whole audience into what's happening. |
